Book Reviews: Ranger's Apprentice: The Sorcerer of the North (Book 5)

Posted on 07:12 by Unknown
The Sorcerer of the North (Ranger's Apprentice, #5)By: John Flanagan
ISBN-10: 0142414298 (Softback)
ISBN-13: 978-0142414293 (Softback)

When a mysterious illness leaves the Araluan border vulnerable to attack, Will must leave his newly acquired fief and the ranger persona to discover the root of the problem.

The Sorcerer of the North is a slightly spooky and highly entertaining tale that ends long before the story concludes. So make sure you have The Siege of Macindaw (Book 6) on hand. The reader should be aware that Will's mental notes on women have changed to reflect his age, so there are a couple mild references to female physique.

Anita Blake is the "vampire slayer", an executioner of vampires on the wrong side of the law, but when a powerful vampire takes control of her friend, Anita finds herself working for the creatures she's so famous for destroying.

Guilty Pleasures is essentially a criminal mystery of the paranormal variety. Fast paced and action packed, it bears some similarities to series like Mercedes Thompson and The Dresden Files. Readers should be aware that this is an adult novel containing:
  • Killing/Death (sometimes in gruesome manners)
  • Decapitation
  • Disturbing crime scene images
  • Injuries (Blood, broken bones, knife/gun wounds)
  • Zombies
  • Sexual banter & Discussions about sex
  • Kissing
  • Strippers and various strip club activities
  • Attempted rape
  • References to genitals, breasts, and various other areas of anatomy
  • Nudity
  • Casual sexuality between numerous people
  • Biting and Blood drinking as a sexual activity
  • References to rape of little boys by adult males
  • Vampire bites/feedings
  • Substantial use of Profanity (lots of F words, female dogs in heat, unwed parents, and human waste)

Sebastian is gone and Jase is missing, but nothing can keep Jase and Clary apart for long. Only, when they meet again Clary finds Jase fundamentally altered. Can anything separate a soul so closely bound to evil? Is the real Jase even still in there and to what lengths will Clary go to find out?

City of Lost Souls is brimming with the romance, peril, heartbreak and hope that make every Mortal Instruments book an engaging young adult read.

Parents and readers should be aware that it contains:
  • Kissing
  • Teen girls and boys staying the night in the same bed
  • Many intense make out scenes that nearly escalate to sex (detailed touching, clothing removal, scratching)
  • Stated sex between teens
  • Full nudity (before and after sex)
  • Homosexuality (kissing, physical sensuality, implied sex)
  • Blood drinking
  • Fighting with fists and weapons
  • Killing
  • Injuries (blood but no guts or gore)
  • law breaking, stealing
  • Drinking and drug use
  • Profanity (including the F word and God used as an expletive)
  • Referenced infidelity of a parent
  • Consorting with demons and angels
Of the first five books, this one definitely contains the most sexual as well as drug & alcohol related material.
